DESCRIPTION: Height up to 24 inches. Growing in tufts the grass-like, pointed leaves of this species are almost indistinguishable in a swathe of grasses and only when the beautiful rich crimson pink flowers are borne is the plant truly noticeable. These solitary blooms, borne atop hollow, angular stems are pea-like in structure, striking against the verdant green. The seed pods are straight-ish, narrow and reach up to 60mm in length.. DISTRIBUTION: A localised plant in England and Wales becoming quite rare further north. HABITAT: Various grassy areas such as bankings, field margins and lush meadows. FLOWERING TIME: May to July. |
